Jason Matthews’ Incredible Journey
Jason Matthews grew up in Takanini, South Auckland, playing softball first and then baseball with Counties Baseball Club. After transitioning from softball to baseball in his youth, he pursued his dream through US college baseball and now plays in the Chicago White Sox minor league system.
“Matthews hopes to make his sister proud by one day being the first Kiwi to make it to the major leagues,” after she raised him from age 18 following their parents’ death.
“Every time I step on the field, I remember why I fell in love with this game as a kid – the excitement, the teammates, the pure joy of playing,” Jason says.
Jason’s pathway: Counties Baseball → US College → Professional Baseball → Chicago White Sox organization

GETTING STARTED IS SO EASY
1️⃣ Pick Your Club & Register
Choose your nearest club (Orewa to Hamilton), select your age group, and secure your spot. Registration open August 1st through November 30th.
2️⃣ Show Up To Your First Training
Your club will provide bats and helmets. You bring sports shoes and a glove (around $50). Playing shirts provided – just purchase baseball pants and cap.
3️⃣ Watch Your Child Transform
12 weeks of skill development, competition, and fun. Watch them grow into a confident player with skills that open doors worldwide.

Q: Will my child have fun even if they’re not naturally athletic?
Absolutely! Our focus is fun first, and every child finds their moment to shine. We’ve seen shy kids become team leaders and “non-athletic” kids become star players.
Q: Is it really welcoming for girls?
100%! Girls play alongside boys and are some of our most enthusiastic players. Many go on to representative teams and leadership roles. The supportive atmosphere is perfect for building confidence.
Q: What if my child gets frustrated learning something new?
Our coaches are trained to keep things positive and fun. We break skills down into games and celebrate every small win. Frustration quickly turns to excitement!
Q: What about the time commitment?
1-2 practices per week (1.5 hours each) plus Saturday games. Less travel than cricket since we have 8 Auckland locations.
Q: How much does the fun cost?
Typically $150-250 for 14 weeks of enjoyment. That’s less than many other sports.
Q: Which club will be the most fun for my child?
All our clubs prioritize fun! Choose based on location: Orewa, North Shore (Albany), Central City (Mt Roskill), Waitakere (Ranui), West City (Te Atatū), Bayside (Glendowie), HP Hawks (Pakuranga), or Hamilton.
Q: What if my child wants to quit other sports to focus on this?
We love enthusiasm, but we encourage kids to try multiple sports! Baseball skills actually help with everything else they play.
Q: Is there really a pathway to higher levels?
Absolutely. We have Auckland rep teams, Little League World Series qualification, US college scholarship opportunities, and professional development programs.
Q: What if this doesn’t work for my child?
With 70% focus on fun and development for younger ages, and age-appropriate competition structure, we’ve successfully integrated hundreds of players from other sports.
